Cell Phones: An Essential Piece of Security Equipment
A jeweler’s security equipment can be very sophisticated and expensive.
However, one of the most essential pieces of equipment is commonplace and very likely personally owned by every member of the store’s staff.
Regardless of specific features or degree of “smartness,” the common cell phone can be one of your best defenses against crime.
Consider these applications.
- When you open and close your store, be sure one employee observes from a safe distance with a cell phone ready in case there is trouble.
- If your business is being “cased,” one employee should leave with a cell phone and observe from a safe distance. If appropriate, the employee should call police or a security guard and ask that an officer visit the store immediately.
- Always keep a cell phone handy when driving. Criminals follow jewelers or traveling salespeople as they drive away from a store. If you are being followed, get a flat tire, or are involved in an accident, use it to call the police.
- Keep a phone with you at home in case thieves attempt to enter your home.
Remember, in some cases your window of opportunity to use your phone may be only seconds long. Carry your cell phone with you — not in a purse, a desk drawer, etc. — for quick access. And, of course, it is useful only when it is charged! Keep yours full of juice at all times.
