Jewelry Crime Report: Robberies Heat Up in The South & East Coast

The Jewelers Security Alliance Crime Message Center shared some alarming crimes throughout the month of November and a few incidents were downright shocking.

One smash-and-grab robbery in this jewelry crime report occurred during broad daylight on a busy Manhattan street.

In fact, surveillance video shared by the NYPD shows many vehicles passing by outside and even a pedestrian strolling past the shop.

This was just one of a few separate robberies that occurred across the east coast and southern United States. Multiple thefts and one burglary were reported in diverse areas across the country.

Wednesday, November 30 Wauwatosa, WI Distraction Theft
Crime Description
  • Two suspects inquired about luxury watches at a store in a mall, displayed a large amount of cash, and were informed by a sales associate that payments over $10,000 in cash required a special tax form — at that point the suspects stated they had a brother in the mall with a high credit limit and would go find him, but asked to see the watch (now back in its box) again before leaving

  • Neither the suspects or their brother returned and it was later discovered that the watch was no longer in the box

  • Suspect one is described as a European man in 40s, 5'5" and 150 pounds with a medium complexion, short and dark hair, gold caps on his teeth, and wore a black coat with a white shirt

  • Suspect two is described as a European man in his 30s, 5'6" and 190 pounds with dark hair and a goatee — he wore a fedora, dark coat, and dark pants

Tuesday, November 29 New York , NY Armed Robbery
Crime Description
  • At approximately 8:00 p.m. three suspects ran into a store at gunpoint, hit a jeweler in the head with the butt of a gun and proceeded to steal a large quantity of jewelry

  • The suspects were described as a black female and two black males

Saturday, November 26 Dickson, TN Grab-and-Run Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 7:00 p.m.a suspect inquired about yellow gold chains for himself and white gold chains for his wife — he was shown several pieces and selected four, but when the items were placed on the pad at the register, the suspect grabbed them and walked out of the store

  • The suspect as described as a 55-year-old African American man, 6'2" and 300 pounds with a graying beard, and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, gray jacket, black pants, white shoes, sunglasses, and a black beanie

Monday, November 21 Anchorage, AK Grab-and-Run Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 8:48 p.m., a suspect requested to see gold chains and agreed to take two that he was shown — while the sales associate went to the register, the suspect stated he also wanted to see watches and the associate went over to the watch case with the chains, which is when the suspects grabbed the chains and fled. 

  • The suspect is described as a 30-year-old Hispanic man, 5’8” and 140 pounds, and was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt with black jeans.

Monday, November 21 New York, NY Smash-and-Grab Robbery
Crime Description
  • At approximately 10:40 a.m., two armed suspects entered a store and one pointed a gun at employees, ordered them to get on the floor, and the other smashed display cases. The suspects wore winter coats and sunglasses.

Thursday, November 17 Missouri City, TX Armed Robbery
Crime Description
  • At approximately 11:35 p.m., a suspect asked to see diamond ring, stated he wanted to buy it and after proceeding to the register, he continued to walk out of the store — when approached, he lifted his shirt to reveal a gun and exited without paying

  • The suspect is described as a 50-year-old black male, 6'0" tall, was last seen wearing a reflective vest, and drove a green, late model Chevy truck

Tuesday, November 15 Columbus, OH Distraction Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 4:18 p.m., two suspects were shown diamond stud earrings by side-by-side display cases where the sales associate stood in the middle and both suspects on the opposite sides — when the associate removed a pair of earrings to show to one suspect, the other reached into to the showcase and concealed another pair

  • Suspect one is a black male in his 40's, 6'0" and 240 pounds

  • Suspect two is a black male in his 40's, 6'3" and 240 pounds, and was last seen wearing jeans with a red pullover and a gray Kangol hat

Sunday, November 13 Gilroy, CA Grab-and-Run Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 1:10 p.m., a suspect returned to the store from the night before, stated her name was Miriam and asked to see women's rings — she was given an item, but when she realized all associates were occupied, she grabbed the ring and fled from the store

  • The suspect is described as a 25-year-old Hispanic woman, 5'5" and 150 pounds, hazel eyes, several moles on her face, a reed mark in the sclera of her eye,  had two star tattoos on each wrist and a butterfly with initials on one of her hands, and drove a red Chevy Cobalt without plates — the associate also mentioned that she smelled of marijuana when she came in the night before

Crime Description
  • Suspect(s) broke through a store’s rear door, disabled the alarm system, hid in a back room, and then drilled a hole into the safe and stole the contents inside

Thursday, November 10 Smyrna, TN Armed Robbery
Crime Description
  • At approximately 12:25 p.m., a suspect was asked if he would like to fill out a credit application after looking at earrings — when asked to see a license, he brandished a gun and ordered the sales associate to put the earnings in a bag

  • The suspect is described as a Black male in his late 20’s, 5’10” and  160 pounds, had dreadlocks and a yellow gold grill on his upper and lower teeth, and was last seen wearing a red and black baseball cap with an Indians logo, a gray t-shirt that said “Lifted” on the front, white tennis shoes, and wire rim glasses He had dreadlocks underneath his hat and wore wire rim glasses

Wednesday, November 9 Albuquerque, NM Grab-and-Run Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 2:00 p.m., two suspects asked to see chains and did not want to give one back after trying on several pieces — the sales associate eventually got the items back and placed them on the register, but was distracted by another customer and noticed that the chains were stolen when she returned

  • Suspect one is described a Hispanic male is his early 20s, 5’3” and 135 pounds with a goatee, and was last seen wearing a black hoodie

  • Suspect two is described a Hispanic male is his early 20s, 5’0” tall and 120 pounds with a tattoo of a crown on the left side of his neck, has a pierced eyebrow, and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and gray baseball hat

Saturday, November 5 Gulfport, MS Armed Robbery
Crime Description
  • At approximately 9:35 p.m., a store manager went to make a deposit at a local bank — while pulling into a lane at the bank she noticed a vehicle in front of her and shortly thereafter a man exited the vehicle, pointed a gun at the manager, and demanded the deposit bag

  • The suspect is described as a black male wearing a hoodie and ski mask, driving a white Lexus with Mississippi plates

Friday, November 4 Wichita, KS Grab-and-Run Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 3:45 p.m., a suspect was shown several engagement rings and discussed purchasing with in-store credit with the sales associate after about 15 minutes of being in the store — when the associate turned around, the suspects grabbed several rings and fled from the store

  • The suspect is described as a black male in his late 30s, 5'10" and 180 pounds with a medium build, short hair, and was last seen wearing jeans, a white t-shirt, black rectangular glasses, and also carried a hard hat — he drove a red Pontiac with Oklahoma plates

Friday, November 4 St. Augustine, FL Distraction Theft
Crime Description
  • At approximately 3:14 p.m., a suspect inquired about comparing gold chains and the sales associate offered four, but then lost track of the chains and the suspects palmed one and left the store

  • The suspect is described as a 65-year-old black male, 5'11" with a heavy build, alight complexion and mustache, and was last seen wearing a tan suit, brown dress shirt, and fedora style hat — he is believed to have committed multiple thefts in Georgia

Tuesday, November 1 Aurora, IL Sneak Theft
Crime Description
  • At 7:10 p.m., a couple inquired about diamond engagement rings and while being presented to, the male suspect stood up and placed his coat over the counter with his backpack, opened his backpack, removed medication, and then leaned over the counter and placed jewelry into his backpack — the theft was not discovered until two days later and the suspects left the store without making a purchase 

  • The male suspect is described as a 47-year-old black male with a medium build, bald with some facial hair, and was last seen wearing blue jogging pants with white stripes on the sides, a brown shirt and dark jacket

  • The female suspect is described as a 35-year-old white woman with blond hair, who wore a blue sweater with dark pants and a pink shirt
