Summer is all fun and games until your ring ends up at the bottom of the lake. From the boat to the beach, to the garden, there are some places your most-treasured jewelry doesn’t need to be. The last thing we at Jewelers Mutual Group want is for your ring to become sunken or buried treasure.
Summer's not over yet
Here are three summer activities in which you may want to reconsider wearing your jewelry. Instead, store it in a safe place and put it back on when your fun in the sun is done.
1. Swimming
Salt water and chlorine can damage and discolor metals such as gold and platinum and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.
Plus, cold temperature of the water in pools, oceans, lakes and rivers causes your finger size to shrink temporarily.
When this happens, a ring can easily slip off the finger without your being aware of it, until it’s too late.
2. Sunbathing
The sun can bleach certain materials, especially natural elements. Substances like lotion can get stuck into the crevices of chains and prongs which make it hard to remove later.
Plus, these products cause a film to form on your jewelry, making it appear dull and dingy.
If you're going to keep your jewelry on, a trip to your jewelry for a professional cleaning will help revitalize the sparkle.
3. Gardening
Dirt and small rocks are abrasive to jewelry. If it’s not cleaned right away, your jewelry can be permanently damaged. Beware the dangers of gardening gloves too.
