Celebrate Earth Day With Green Jewelry
Today, the word sustainable is becoming just about as cliché as going green. It seems everybody’s doing it… or at least claims to be.
This Earth Day, as you quench your thirst from your BPA-free, aluminum water bottle and tote around your organic-woven shopping bag, think about stepping out of the recyclable box and reducing your footprint in new ways.
Did you know that it’s easy “blinging” green, too?
Since the “blood diamonds” controversy, the desire for sustainable and ethically created fine jewelry continues to grow. The bridal market has even seen a big surge in green jewelry as more brides-to-be develop more eco-conscious standards.
Even though the retail jewelry industry as a whole has been a little slow to embrace the green movement, many jewelers are stepping up by sourcing and selling gemstones from labs or mines that are more earth-friendly, and metals that can be recycled.
Sadly, only a handful of mines in the world use both eco-friendly and ethical practices.
This is why it’s been such a big deal for retail chains like Target, Sears, Wal-Mart, QVC and JC Penney, as well as luxury brands such as Tiffany and Cartier to sign EARTHWORKS “No Dirty Gold” campaign pledge to seek cleaner sources of gold and other precious metals for jewelry.
These retailers agree to buy precious metals only from mining companies that abide by “the Golden Rules.” They deserve a gold star in my book!
In honor of Earth Day, ask your jeweler for their recommendations in eco-friendly jewelry. Why not “do good” by the earth and add some sparkle to your sustainable efforts at the same time!
How will you be celebrate Earth Day?
