Keep your gold jewelry looking brilliant with these four simple cleaning steps.

  • Prepare a solution: Mix mild dish soap with warm water for a gentle clean.
  • Soak and brush: Let jewelry soak, then use a soft brush to remove dirt.
  • Rinse and dry: Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth to avoid scratches.

Has your gold lost its luster?

Maybe you have a gold class ring with a cool retro style you want to bring out of hiding, but you’ve never taken the time to clean it. Have we got the tips for you!

Fortunately, cleaning gold jewelry is pretty simple.

How to clean gold jewelry at home

  1. Soak in a solution of Dawn dish soap and warm, not hot, water for 15 minutes.
  2. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush any dirt or grime that may have accumulated on the gold.
  3. Rinse in a bowl of clean, warm water. If rinsing under the faucet, make sure the drain is closed.
  4. Pat dry with a soft cloth.

Your gold will look as good as new!

What common cleaning chemical will damage gold? Chlorine. Never use chlorinated bleach to clean your gold, and you should also be careful if you use chlorinated bleach to wash clothing. You’ll also want to avoid exposure to chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs, as even this can damage gold.

Don’t use toothpaste, either. Toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch gold and some gemstones.

Bonus tip: Best to put your jewelry in a safe place before you take a dip in any large body of water!

Proper cleaning and care is just one way to keep your gold jewelry safe. You can protect your investment further by obtaining personal jewelry insurance through Jewelers Mutual. It’s an affordable option that covers loss, damage, and disappearances. You can check your rate by clicking the button below.
