How to Clean Platinum Jewelry

Platinum is one of the most popular metals used in jewelry. It is prized for its silvery-white hue, lustrous shine, hypoallergenic nature and durability. It’s 30 times rarer than gold (which means it’s generally more expensive) and has a luxurious and prestigious feel. Platinum is highly reflective, which can enhance the sparkle and brilliance of any diamond or gemstone set within it, giving it the ultimate “wow” factor. And thanks to its high density, platinum is a worthy contender against the rigors of everyday wear, making it the perfect choice for long-term investment pieces like an engagement ring or wedding band. But like all fine jewelry, platinum needs a little TLC to extend its longevity and shine. Ahead, find out how to properly clean and care for your platinum pieces so you can enjoy them long into the future.

How Often Should You Clean Platinum Jewelry?

Compared to other precious metals, platinum is relatively low maintenance. It won’t tarnish like silver due to its chemical composition (most platinum jewelry is composed of 90-95% pure platinum; the remaining alloys are nonreactive and won’t corrode). And unlike white gold, platinum doesn’t need to be replated to retain its color. Still, it’s a good idea to establish a cleaning and polishing regimen to keep platinum jewelry in pristine condition.

For platinum jewelry that’s worn every day like a second skin, such as a platinum engagement ring, wedding band, or platinum earrings, you should aim to clean your platinum jewelry at home with a mild soap solution (more on this ahead) at least once a month. Platinum jewelry pieces worn occasionally can be cleaned less often. For optimal care, consider wiping down your pieces with a soft, lint-free cloth once a week to remove dirt buildup and restore shine. In addition to these regular cleanings at home, Jewelers Mutual recommends having your platinum jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected twice a year.

Why is Cleaning Platinum Jewelry Important?

Platinum jewelry is a significant financial (and often emotional) investment, so you will want to take good care of it! While it’s true that platinum is highly resistant to wear and tear, tarnish and corrosion, it can still accumulate dirt, oils and grime, which can make it appear dull (not a great look for something you spent a lot of money on!). Also, be aware that over time, your platinum piece may develop a soft, matte-like patina on its surface, often described as a slightly frosted or satiny finish. Micro-scratches, exposure to the elements and regular wear usually cause this. Patina is not necessarily a bad thing, however. Many people love the vintage, lived-in look it gives to their platinum jewelry. But if you prefer a smoother, more lustrous appearance, fear not! Platinum patina can be easily removed using the homemade platinum jewelry cleaner below (or, if necessary, by taking it to a professional jeweler for a thorough polishing).

Cleaning Platinum Jewelry

Are you ready to bring your platinum jewelry’s luster back to life? Platinum cleaning is essential if you want to properly care for your piece. The best platinum jewelry cleaner is simple solution of soap and water – gentle yet oh-so-effective! *

*Avoid abrasive cleaners such as vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, or ammonia, as the harshness and acidity in these ingredients can cause damage to the metal and/or gemstone(s).

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • A bowl of warm water
  • A mild, liquid dish soap
  • An unused, soft-bristled toothbrush
  • A soft, lint-free cloth

Steps to Take:

  • Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Stir the mixture gently to ensure the soap is well dissolved.
  • Submerge your platinum jewelry in the suds solution and let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub between crevices, around prongs, and underneath the setting to remove trapped debris.
  • Rinse the jewelry thoroughly under cool water to remove all soap residue (use a strainer or plug the drain for safety).
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to pat jewelry dry (avoid using napkins, paper towels and abrasive materials like steel wool or rough sponges).

Tips for Maintaining Platinum Jewelry

When properly cared for, platinum jewelry can last for generations. Follow these expert tips to keep your piece protected and looking its best throughout the years.

Clean and polish regularly

Clean your platinum jewelry at home with soap and water at least once a month to maintain its shine and remove dirt buildup. Polish your piece with a soft, lint-free cloth (jewelry-specific polishing cloths are even better) before and after you wear it, or at least once a week. Signs that your jewelry may need a spruce-up include a dull appearance or the presence of a patina.

Store it carefully

When you’re not wearing your platinum jewelry, it’s important to keep it in a safe place. Consider storing it in its original packaging, a lint-free pouch (silk or velvet), or a fabric-lined jewelry box. To prevent scratching, keep platinum pieces away from other metals and delicate gemstones.

Avoid contact with harsh chemicals

Platinum is considered resistant to most chemicals, but repeated exposure to strong substances can cause minor surface scratches and dullness. Be sure to remove your platinum jewelry before applying personal care products (makeup, hairspray, lotion, perfume, etc.), swimming or using household cleaning agents.

Remove before high-risk activities

Platinum may be durable, but it’s not indestructible. Minimize the risk of damaging or losing your platinum jewelry by not wearing it during strenuous activities such as lifting weights, household chores, heavy yard work, swimming, water-skiing, etc.

Schedule a cleaning with a jewelry pro

Bring your platinum jewelry to a professional jeweler for a thorough cleaning every six months. They have high-tech equipment that can safely and effectively oust dirt and remove any stubborn scratches, abrasions or unwanted patina. In addition, a jeweler can inspect your piece for any loose stones, weakened prongs and other issues that may lead to costly repairs if left undetected.
